DR. FABRICE BARLESI: By 2030, 11% of colon cancers and 23% of rectal cancers will occur in patients under 50 (1), while gastrointestinal cancers will become the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. For the population under 50 affected by cancer, projections indicate that the global number of new cases and deaths will increase by 31% and 21% respectively by 2030, a large part of this increase being attributable to gastrointestinal cancers.
All studies converge to show that there is indeed an increase in the incidence of these “early-onset cancers,” including a 2025 study (2). Epidemiological data, mainly from North America, indicate an increase in several types of cancers, including breast, thyroid, but also digestive cancers. Globally, the number of new cancer diagnoses in those under 50 has increased by about 80% in less than three decades, from 1.82 million cases in 1990 to 3.26 million in 2019 (3). This trend is also observed in France, with an increase in digestive and breast cancers, first observed in a French study of 15-39 year olds. Le type d’exposition que nous pourrons identifier à partir des prélèvements collectés permettra de rechercher d’éventuelles signatures biologiques témoignant d’expositions ou de modifications spécifiques liées à certains facteurs environnementaux (air, eau, sols…). Sur le plan toxicologique, nous étudierons notamment la présence de pesticides et de microplastiques, ces derniers représentant une exposition émergente susceptible d’expliquer certaines pathologies cancéreuses. Nous aborderons cette analyze sans a priori, en explorant toutes les pistes possibles, qu’il s’agisse de signatures particulières ou de modifications associées à des expositions.
