Summer camp. For many adults, the phrase conjures up hazy memories of sun-drenched days, campfire songs, and the sheer, unadulterated joy of being a kid. But what if you could recapture that feeling, not by dusting off old sleeping bags, but by rolling out your yoga mat? Increasingly, yoga studios and retreat centers are offering “yoga summer camps” for adults, blending the mindful practice of yoga with the carefree spirit of childhood.
These aren’t your typical, intense yoga retreats focused solely on deep introspection. Instead, they’re designed to help adults unplug, reconnect with nature, and, most importantly, have fun.
More Than Just Asanas: Embracing Playfulness and Connection
While yoga remains a central element, its just one piece of the puzzle in these unique adult camps. The emphasis shifts from rigorous practice to a holistic experience that encourages participants to shed their adult responsibilities and embrace a sense of childlike wonder.”Our camp definitely more adventure focused,” says one camp leader, highlighting a common theme: getting outdoors and engaging with the world around you.
the Nostalgia Factor: Longing for Simplicity
Sarah garman, a yoga teacher and facilitator at Twist Yoga, observes that participants in their Summer camp for Grownups frequently enough seek to recapture the feeling of being a kid again.”There’s frequently enough a sense of nostalgia,” she explains.
Katie Hagel, who oversees Kripalu’s Yoga Summer Camp, echoes this sentiment. “there’s a longing for the joy and openness of summer as a kid, when the days felt long, simple, and good,” she notes.
In essence, yoga summer camps facilitate carefree fun, punctuated by moments of practice and introspection, rather than the other way around. The transformative experiences that occur are often a delightful byproduct of this playful approach.
A Full spectrum of Summertime Activities
Yoga summer camp still revolves around yoga, but practice is just one of many enjoyable summertime activities.
At Kripalu, for instance, the schedule includes hiking, kayaking, archery, and classic campfires complete with s’mores, alongside daily yoga practice. “This retreat is for people who want to feel expansive, playful, and connected-not just inwardly, but outwardly too,” Hagel explains.
Twist Yoga took the outward-focused ethos a step further this year.Along with morning and evening yoga classes, participants were divided into “teams” for activities like cornhole, badminton, and charades. While competition isn’t typically associated with yoga, the response was overwhelmingly positive. “We found that everybody participated in everything,” Garman reports. “There was a lot of interaction.”
A Time for Fun: Reclaiming the Joy of Play
While the “seriousness” frequently enough associated with retreats is a generalization, and many do incorporate excursions like surf lessons or nature trips, signing up for a retreat often signals a desire for personal growth. Whether it’s a traditional retreat or a yoga summer camp, leaving self-imposed pressure at home can be incredibly liberating and even catalytic.Sometimes, a little fun is exactly what we, and the world, need most.
as Gunn McQuillan wisely puts it, “Human beings were meant to play. It doesn’t end with childhood, and when we deprive ourselves of this, we lose the sense of wonder and curiosity. I think people are desperately in search of that right now.”
Yoga summer camps offer a powerful antidote to the pressures of modern life, inviting adults to reconnect with their playful spirit, embrace the present moment, and rediscover the simple, profound joy of being alive.
