Yogyakarta State University (UNY) is offering students a unique option: the ability to graduate even before their official diplomas are issued. This move comes as a response to ongoing delays within the national education data system, PDDIKTI, and aims to prevent students from incurring additional tuition fees.
Addressing Systemic Delays Impacting Graduation
According to UNY officials, the current system for processing graduation data is facing significant hurdles. “For PISN to be issued within a week,” explained a university representative, referencing the Persetujuan Ijazah Sementara Nasional (national Provisional Diploma Approval), “the system has been down for a week, and sometimes the PDDIKTI system is down for 10 days, so there are both internal and external factors that we cannot control in the Jakarta system.”
These delays can have a real financial impact on students. Typically, students are required to pay tuition for the following semester if their graduation isn’t officially processed before the payment deadline. UNY is proactively working to circumvent this issue.
UNY’s Proactive Approach: Expediting Graduation for Students
UNY is distinguishing itself from other Indonesian universities by prioritizing student needs. “In UNY, we are trying to assist (expedite) so that students don’t have to pay the next semester’s tuition fees,” the representative stated. “If they finish their studies and exams today, they can be judicated the next day and graduate two weeks later, this does not happen in other universities.”
This means that students who have successfully completed their academic requirements can proceed with graduation ceremonies and be recognized as graduates without waiting for the often-lengthy PDDIKTI processing time. While some universities require diploma issuance before allowing graduation, UNY is choosing to prioritize the immediate needs of its students.
Avoiding Tuition Fees and the Drop-Out policy
The university understands the financial burden that continued tuition fees can place on recent graduates. By allowing students to graduate sooner, UNY is helping them avoid these unnecessary costs.Furthermore, this initiative is notably crucial for students nearing the university’s seven-year study limit. A drop-out policy is in effect for students from the 2018 intake who fail to graduate by July 2025.UNY hopes this option will help ensure these students can graduate on time and avoid being affected by the policy. “So the statement was made as an option, especially for students who want to graduate earlier,” the representative clarified.
How the New Option Works: A Simple Statement
The solution is straightforward. If you, as a UNY student, wish to graduate before your diploma is officially issued, you simply need to fill out a statement indicating your preference.”If they do not want to graduate early, it’s also fine, they don’t need to fill out the statement,” the university confirmed, emphasizing that the option is entirely voluntary. This flexible approach demonstrates UNY’s commitment to student autonomy and well-being.
this initiative highlights UNY’s dedication to supporting its students through systemic challenges and ensuring a smooth transition from university life to the next chapter.
