Seoul, South Korea – The defence team for Yoon Suk-yeol has raised significant health issues, claiming thay are preventing him from attending his trial and cooperating with investigators. The team has accused the special counsel of disrespecting their client’s dignity and honour by discussing his prison attire, according to local media reports.
Health Issues Cited as Reason for Absence
Yu Jeong-hwa,a lawyer representing Yoon, stated that his client’s health problems are the reason he cannot be present for his trial or undergo questioning. The defence team issued a statement on Thursday detailing Yoon’s alleged medical conditions, which include cardiovascular, autonomic nervous system, and eye issues.
Allegations of Medical Neglect and Risk of Blindness
The defence team further cited an unnamed hospital, which reportedly warned that Yoon faces the risk of blindness due to a lack of medical treatment over the past three months. This assertion adds a serious dimension to the ongoing legal proceedings.
Background: Yoon’s Martial Law Decree
The article also touches upon a past event where Yoon imposed a martial law decree, which saw armed troops deployed in Seoul. This decree, however, was short-lived, lasting only a few hours before being unanimously voted down by politicians.
Yoon’s justification for this action was that it was a last-ditch effort to garner public support for his opposition to what he termed the “wickedness” of Mr. Lee’s Democratic Party. At the time, the Democratic Party was the main opposition and, according to Yoon, had been obstructing his agenda, impeaching top officials, and reducing the government’s proposed budget.
