Yos Suprapto Exhibition Postponed, National Gallery Denies Influencing Curator
Indonesian Artist’s Exhibition delayed Amid curator Dispute
Jakarta, Indonesia – A highly anticipated exhibition featuring the works of renowned Indonesian artist Yos Suprapto has been postponed indefinitely following a disagreement between the artist and the appointed curator.
Zamrud Setya Negara, head of the Museum and Gallery team at the Indonesian Heritage agency (IHA), which oversees exhibitions at the National Gallery, emphasized that the curator’s assessment of the artwork is a professional process free from external influence.
“There where no directives given. The curator, in their professional capacity, has a space that cannot be intervened upon,” Zamrud stated during a press conference at the National Gallery in Jakarta.
While speculation has arisen regarding the content of Suprapto’s paintings, particularly the resemblance of certain figures to political figures, Zamrud declined to comment, stating, “We will not comment on that, as our focus remains on the artwork itself.”
The National Gallery, according to Zamrud, acts as a facilitator and mediator in such situations, aiming to find common ground between the artist and curator.”We respect the position of both the curator and the artist. The National Gallery of Indonesia greatly appreciates and supports the artistic expression of every artist,” he added.
Zamrud explained that the curator holds the authority to select artworks deemed suitable for exhibition.
“The curator, as a professional, has the authority to choose the works. there are boundaries that cannot be crossed,” he emphasized.
The initial preparation for Suprapto’s exhibition proceeded smoothly, but a disagreement emerged between the artist and curator Suwarno wisetrotomo in the final stages.
“towards the end of the process, just before the exhibition opening, there was a difference of opinion regarding the curator’s proposed concept and Suprapto’s execution,” Zamrud revealed.
The National Gallery attempted to mediate the situation, bringing both parties together on December 19th, the scheduled opening day of the exhibition. However, despite the efforts, a resolution could not be reached, leading to Suwarno’s resignation as curator.
When asked about the possibility of appointing a new curator,Zamrud remained noncommittal.
“We will not speculate. We still hope that discussions will continue so that this exhibition can proceed,” he concluded.
