Nintendo Switch Online subscribers received a nostalgic boost today, February 4, 2026, with the surprise addition of two classic Game Boy titles: Yoshi and Balloon Kid. The “shadow drop,” as some are calling it, expands the Game Boy: Nintendo Classics app’s library to a total of 43 games, offering a trip down memory lane for veteran gamers and a new experience for a younger audience.

A Pair of Cult Classics

Both Yoshi and Balloon Kid arrived as part of the first Game Boy app update of 2026. While not necessarily household names like Super Mario Land or The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, these titles hold a special place for fans of the early 1990s handheld era. Yoshi, released in 1991, presents a unique puzzle experience where players control Mario as he attempts to manage falling enemies. The goal is to stack pairs of monsters or enclose them within eggshells to eliminate them, testing reflexes and strategic thinking as the pace increases. A two-player mode adds a competitive element to the frantic gameplay.

Balloon Kid, originally released in 1990, offers a different kind of challenge. A side-scrolling platformer inspired by the NES title Balloon Fight, players take on the role of Alice, navigating levels using balloons for lift and avoiding obstacles. The game also features a two-player mode focused on balloon collection and competitive level traversal.

Expanding the Nintendo Switch Online Library

Nintendo’s strategy of gradually adding classic titles to its Switch Online service continues to resonate with subscribers. The addition of Yoshi and Balloon Kid demonstrates a willingness to delve beyond the most well-known franchises, offering a diverse range of experiences from the Game Boy’s extensive library. Looking Ahead: Virtual Boy and Pokémon Nostalgia

Nintendo’s retro gaming push doesn’t stop with the Game Boy. On February 17, 2026, the Virtual Boy: Nintendo Classics app is set to launch, featuring seven playable titles, including Virtual Boy Wario Land. Two additional games, D-Hopper and Zero Racer, are planned to follow. Access to the Virtual Boy library requires a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription and a special Virtual Boy accessory for the Switch 2.

The inclusion of Virtual Boy titles is particularly noteworthy, given the console’s historical significance as an early attempt at virtual reality, despite its commercial shortcomings. This move signals Nintendo’s willingness to experiment with and revisit even its less successful hardware ventures.

The addition of Yoshi and Balloon Kid is likely to fuel speculation about the potential arrival of other classic Pokémon titles. With the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon series approaching, fans are hoping for the return of beloved games like Pokémon Red Edition and Blue Edition. Currently, only Pokémon Trading Card Game is available on the Game Boy app, while Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: The Dark Storm are slated for release on the Switch 2’s GameCube app. Whether Nintendo will expand the Pokémon offerings on Switch Online remains to be seen, but the company has historically maintained a tight-lipped approach to future releases, leaving fans to anticipate what’s next.
