Updated June 29, 2025
BOSTON-The Boston Red Sox, mired in a losing streak, anticipate a potential offensive spark with Masataka Yoshida set to begin a rehab assignment. Yoshida, 31, has been sidelined as undergoing right shoulder surgery in October. he will join Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided updates on Yoshida’s progress before Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. Cora noted Yoshida will also see some time in the outfield, a position he played sparingly last season, primarily serving as the designated hitter. In 2023, his first season after inking a five-year, $90 million deal, Yoshida played 85 games in left field.
Yoshida was observed participating in batting practice, shagging fly balls in right field, and running bases Saturday.
In other injury news, third baseman Alex Bregman is also making strides in his recovery from a strained right quad, an injury that has kept him out since late May. Bregman, 31, engaged in light running drills and took ground balls at third base before Saturday’s game.
Cora acknowledged the positive steps for both players. “It was a good day for him and Masa,” Cora said.
Prior to his injury, Bregman was a key offensive contributor, hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 51 games. Cora indicated Bregman is not expected back untill after the All-Star break. The Red Sox signed Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract in february.
Boston entered Saturday’s game on a six-game losing streak, their longest since September 2022. They lost to Toronto 9-0 on Friday.
What’s next
Yoshida’s performance in his rehab assignment will determine when he rejoins the Red Sox lineup, potentially bolstering their offensive capabilities. Bregman’s continued progress will be monitored as he aims for a return after the All-Star break, further impacting the team’s role and performance.
