You don’t always need an eagle eye to spot a fresh meal, sometimes a crow eye will do
Nature turned dramatic along the Charles River in West Roxbury this week, as a scene straight out of a wildlife documentary unfolded at Cow Island Pond. Eyewitness Mary Ellen described the event, which began when coyotes reportedly chased a deer onto the icy stretch near Rivermoor Street. The pursuit ended tragically for the deer—and, possibly, for one of the coyotes, as its lifeless body was later spotted on the ice.
The aftermath became a feast for scavengers. Ravens and crows descended swiftly, but the sighting of a bald eagle—joined by a mate—added a regal twist to the scene. The majestic birds took their turn at the impromptu buffet, a stark reminder of nature’s unflinching cycle.
As of the following morning, the coyote carcass remained untouched, leaving observers to wonder how long it would remain so. The incident, though grim, offered a rare glimpse into the raw dynamics of the animal kingdom. For those who witnessed it, the scene was nothing short of a real-life “Wild Kingdom” moment. Video footage captured the scavengers at work, highlighting the beauty and brutality of the natural world.
Residents and nature enthusiasts alike are left reflecting on the delicate balance of life and death that plays out in their own backyard.
