Two Hikers Rescued After Getting Lost Near Mirador Atrapanieblas in La Molina

Two young hikers were reported lost in the hills of La Molina while hiking towards the popular Mirador Atrapanieblas lookout point.

Unable to find their way back, the hikers contacted emergency services via their cell phones, prompting a search and rescue operation.

Authorities requested the young women remain calm and activate their phones’ battery-saving mode, as well as share their location in real time.

The rescue efforts were complicated by the rugged terrain and limited visibility. Rescuers utilized acoustic signals with megaphones and high-intensity lights to locate the hikers.

Hikers Found Safe

The search and rescue operation concluded successfully when the young women were located on a hillside in La Molina.

Accompanied by rescue personnel, the hikers were safely escorted from the area. Both were reported to be in apparent good health, despite the ordeal.

According to reports, the hikers began their ascent in the afternoon, but the fading daylight and challenging terrain led them to lose their bearings and become lost.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness when venturing into mountainous regions. While the hikers were ultimately found safe, their experience highlights the potential dangers of underestimating the challenges posed by changing conditions and difficult terrain.

The successful rescue underscores the value of maintaining communication with authorities and utilizing available technology, such as sharing real-time location data, during emergencies. The quick response and effective coordination of rescue teams were crucial in bringing the hikers home safely.

Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere, emphasizing the need for caution and preparation. In October 2025, two hikers were rescued from the Alpine Lakes Wilderness after becoming lost in snowy conditions, according to a report from KPQ.com. The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office reminded hikers to carry the “ten essentials” – navigation tools, sun protection, insulation, illumination, first-aid supplies, fire starter, repair kit, nutrition, hydration and emergency shelter – and to be prepared for rapidly changing mountain conditions.

Another incident in April 2023 involved three hikers requiring rescue on the La Luz trail in New Mexico, as reported by KOAT.com. Rescue crews urged hikers to dress for winter-like conditions, even during other times of the year, due to unpredictable weather patterns.

The importance of preparedness is further illustrated by a story of a lost hiker in Peru who was guided to safety by a stray dog, as reported by Pawbuzz.com. This highlights the unpredictable nature of outdoor adventures and the potential for unexpected assistance.

While the circumstances surrounding each incident vary, a common thread emerges: thorough preparation, awareness of surroundings, and the ability to communicate effectively can significantly increase the chances of a safe outcome when exploring the outdoors.
