Olivos, Argentina – A weekend boating trip ended in tragedy when 23-year-old Martín Núñez drowned in the Río de la Plata after jumping into the water.Núñez’s body was recovered Sunday afternoon, concluding a frantic two-day search by authorities.

Núñez was swimming with his girlfriend, Jessica, and a friend, Gastón, who held a boating license, when the incident occurred Friday afternoon. According to Núñez’s father,Cristian,his son decided to jump into the water using a circular life preserver.”He didn’t realise there was a strong current,” Cristian explained. “The life preserver drifted away, and the water was very rough. My son wasn’t a strong swimmer in these conditions.”

Gastón attempted to help Núñez, but the current separated them. “My son was struggling to hold on,” Cristian said. “They let go of each other, and gastón managed to grab the life preserver, but Martín was swept away by the current.”

Cristian last spoke to his son at 3:22 p.m.Friday. “He told me he was out boating and would be home later,” Cristian recalled.

A massive search effort involving divers from the Argentine Naval Prefecture was launched immediately. Tragically, Núñez’s body was found approximately 300 meters downstream from where he disappeared, about 1,000 meters from the Olivos Prefecture station.
