Snowboarder Killed, Skier Injured in Deadly Avalanche in Bulgaria’s Pirin Mountains
BANSKO, Bulgaria – Tragedy struck the slopes of Bulgaria’s Pirin Mountains on Tuesday afternoon when a 25-year-old snowboarder was killed in an avalanche. The incident occurred on the slopes below Todorka Peak, a popular spot for off-piste skiing and snowboarding despite its known avalanche risk.
Two other young men, all friends, were caught in the avalanche. One managed to escape unharmed and immediately alerted authorities. He then bravely dug out his injured friend, a skier, who sustained injuries but survived.
Eight mountain rescuers from Bansko rushed to the scene and recovered the body of the deceased snowboarder. All three men were well-equipped with avalanche safety gear.The Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) issued a stark warning following the incident, urging skiers and snowboarders to avoid off-piste terrain due to the high avalanche risk in the Pirin Mountains. Recent snowfall combined with warmer temperatures has created dangerous conditions.
“This tragic incident highlights the importance of respecting the power of nature and adhering to safety guidelines,” said a spokesperson for the MRS. “Off-piste skiing and snowboarding should only be attempted by experienced individuals with proper training and equipment, and even then, extreme caution is advised.”
