Political support among young voters in Sweden has undergone a dramatic shift, with opposition parties surging past the governing Tidö parties among citizens aged 18 to 29, according to an analysis of DN/Ipsos data published by Dagens Nyheter. During the third quarter of 2022, shortly after the national election, the governing Tidö parties commanded 58 percent support among young voters, compared to 41 percent for the opposition. By the second quarter of 2026, those positions have completely reversed. The opposition now leads with 57 percent to the governing parties’ 40 percent, marking a 16 percentage point swing over the period.

Shifting Party Dynamics Among First-Time Voters

The leftward movement is driven primarily by gains for the Left Party and the Green Party. According to Dagens Nyheter data, the Left Party has climbed to 17 percent among young voters, up from 10 percent during the previous election. The Green Party has nearly tripled its standing in the age group, rising from 4 percent to 11 percent. The Social Democrats also expanded their footprint, growing from 20 percent to 25 percent support. That increase makes the Social Democrats the largest single party in the youngest demographic group, representing a distinct trend break. Conversely, right-leaning and conservative parties in the governing coalition lost ground among youth. The Moderate Party dropped from 28 percent to 19 percent, while the Sweden Democrats fell from 21 percent to 16 percent.

Timeline of the Shift Since the Tidö Agreement

Opinions analyst Nicklas Källebring at Ipsos noted in an interview with Dagens Nyheter that the changes among young voters are the most pronounced of any demographic group. Källebring pointed out that the downturn for the Moderate Party among youth began immediately after the presentation of the Tidö Agreement in the autumn of 2022, and the downward trajectory has continued steadily since. The new figures corroborate earlier findings regarding voter alignment among first-time participants.
