Liam Lawson, the 23-year-old New Zealander, will compete for Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s junior team, following his demotion. This move highlights Red Bull’s reputation for providing opportunities to young drivers,but also for swiftly replacing them if performance expectations are not met. A notable example of Red Bull’s driver strategy is the 2016 switch involving Daniil Kvyat and Max Verstappen. Kvyat was dropped after two collisions with Sebastian Vettel at the Russian Grand Prix. He struggled with the RB20 car. “When I joined red Bull, there had been great drivers who had struggled – Alex [Albon], Pierre [Gasly], they are fantastic drivers and they struggled,” Perez said.
Perez added, ”For me, it was very simple, the car is just quite arduous to get 100% out of it, to get the confidence out of it – and the things I struggled with, even Adrian [Newey, the team’s former design chief] talked about them.”
Jaime Alguersuari,who raced for Toro Rosso from 2009,scoring 25 points in 2011,also understands the pressure.”Red Bull has the ability to make you feel outside of your comfort zone, to make you doubt yourself,” Alguersuari said. “Red Bull is a machine of destroying drivers because they have this mentality and beliefs of what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. So they always push and put pressure on you.”
Alguersuari added, “Even at Toro Rosso they asked me to win a race or or else it was not good enough. You had this feeling of not being good enough all the time unless you are world champion.”
