Russell Investments CEO Discusses Shift to Individual Retirement Savings
Teh obligation for retirement investing has increasingly fallen to individuals as customary pension plans give way to 401(k)s, according to Zach Buchwald, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Russell Investments. buchwald detailed this evolution and his firm’s role in adapting to it during a recent interview with Bloomberg.
Buchwald also discussed the origins of “smart beta” investing, a strategy russell Investments pioneered. Smart beta aims to improve upon traditional market-cap weighted indexes by using alternative weighting schemes based on factors like value, momentum, and quality.
Russell Investments is also implementing a novel programme designed to illustrate the power of compounding. the firm now provides $1,000 to newborns whose parents open an investment account, a proposal initially championed by Buchwald. The goal is to demonstrate the long-term benefits of early investing.
“We wanted to show the importance of starting early,” Buchwald told Bloomberg. “Even a small amount, consistently invested, can grow substantially over time.”
The shift from defined benefit pensions to defined contribution plans like 401(k)s places a greater burden on individuals to make informed investment decisions. Many Americans lack the financial literacy and resources to navigate this complex landscape, leading to concerns about retirement security.
Sources say Russell Investments manages over $320 billion in assets as of December 31, 2025. (Russell Investments)

Recently, the firm has expanded its offerings to include more personalized investment solutions and financial planning tools. (Bloomberg)
