Zach Edey to ⁢Undergo Ankle Surgery,Expected to Miss Start‌ of⁤ Season

Memphis Grizzlies center Zach⁤ Edey will undergo surgery to repair a re-injured ankle,the team announced.⁣ The injury,​ a second⁢ sprain of ⁤the same ankle,​ occurred during an offseason ‍workout. Edey, a ⁣promising NBA rookie, is now expected to miss the beginning of the ⁣2025-26 season, according to ESPN’s ‍Shams Charania.

Edey’s agent,Mark Bartelstein,told ESPN that the decision to pursue surgery was made after consulting with the Grizzlies and multiple‌ specialists. The goal is to‌ ensure Edey returns to full strength⁣ without limitations. The team selected Edey with the No.9 pick in ‌the 2024 NBA Draft.

The initial ankle injury occurred in November during a⁤ game against the⁣ Denver Nuggets. ⁢Edey aggravated the ‍injury‌ after ⁤halftime, causing him to miss 12 games.

During his rookie campaign,the two-time Naismith College Player of the Year from Purdue averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and‌ 1.3 blocks‌ across‌ 66 ⁢games. He also⁢ earned All-Rookie honors and finished ⁤fifth in Rookie of the Year voting.

Edey ‌played in all four ⁣of Memphis’ playoff games against the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 6.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks in 27 minutes per game.

“After consulting with the ⁣Grizzlies and‍ multiple specialists, ⁤we decided this is the best approach for Zach long-term as it gets him ​back to 100% with no limitations,” Edey’s agent, ⁢Mark Bartelstein, told ESPN.
