ZB: Thanks for having me.
ND: Your story is truly inspiring. Can you tell us a bit about your experience battling a rare bone disease as a child, and what that was like for you?
ZB: It was a really tough time, there’s no doubt whatsoever. Being in the hospital for so long, not knowing what the future held, it was scary.But I never gave up hope. My family was amazing – they were there for me every step of the way.
ND: Football became a huge outlet for you during that time. How did the sport help you cope with the challenges you were facing?
ZB: Definitely. Football gave me something to focus on, something to work towards. It was an escape from everything else. When I was on the field, I could forget about everything else going on and just be present in the moment.
ND: You’ve mentioned the importance of your family’s support. Can you share a bit about the role they played in your recovery and your journey to becoming a Hawkeye?
ZB: They were everything.My parents were by my side through every treatment, every setback, every victory. They never let me give up on my dreams, and they always believed in me, even when I doubted myself.
ND: Now that you’re playing for Iowa, what does it mean to you to wear that Hawkeye jersey knowing the path you’ve taken to get here?
ZB: It means the world to me.Every time I put that jersey on, I think about everything I’ve been through. It reminds me to never take anything for granted and to always give it my all.
ND: Zach, what message would you have for young people who might be facing their own challenges, big or small?
ZB: Never give up on your dreams. No matter what obstacles you face, keep fighting, keep believing in yourself. You are stronger than you think, and anything is possible.
