North Florida Men’s Basketball Head Coach Bobby Kennen announced the addition of Zack Freesman to the coaching staff as an assistant coach on April 14, 2026.
Freesman returns to the University of North Florida as an alumnus, having previously served the program as a student assistant. During his tenure as a student assistant, Freesman was part of the program during the acquisition of two ASUN Conference Championships.
Professional Coaching Experience
Prior to joining the University of North Florida staff, Freesman served as the Associate Head Coach at Florida Tech during the 2025-26 season. In his single season with Florida Tech, he contributed to a four-win improvement for the team and managed the recruitment of Ty Harpring, who was named the 2025-26 SSC Freshman of the Year.
Freesman’s previous experience includes roles as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at two other institutions. He held these positions at Coastal Carolina during the 2024-25 season and at Western Carolina from 2021 to 2024.
While at Western Carolina, Freesman was instrumental in recruiting several top athletes, including Vonterius Woolbright, who earned the title of 2023-24 SoCon Player of the Year.
Return to Alma Mater
Head Coach Bobby Kennen noted that he first met Freesman when Freesman was a high school senior, at which time he expressed a clear ambition to become a Division I coach. Kennen stated that Freesman’s professional actions have aligned with that vision through tireless work and the accumulation of experience across various basketball conferences and under successful head coaches.

for himself and his wife, Jillian. He stated his intention to work tirelessly to maintain the winning tradition at the university and assist in returning the program to the national stage.
