Zackery Powell’s Turn?
Gatineau MMA Fighter Zackery Powell eyes UFC Opportunity Amidst Upcoming Fight
NIAGARA FALLS,ontario – Zackery “Pow Pow” Powell,a mixed martial artist from Gatineau,Quebec,is preparing for a pivotal fight in British Columbia on April 17,while concurrently keeping an eye on potential opportunities with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Powell (9-2), who competes professionally, sees his upcoming bout as a crucial step toward his ultimate goal of joining the UFC ranks. He also acknowledged the possibility of serving as a late replacement at the UFC’s upcoming Montreal gala on May 10.
“There are a lot of fights in our weight class,” Powell said.”Whoever wins can be ready to replace at the last minute there. I will be at the gala anyway because one of my main partners will perform there.”
Despite his aspirations for the UFC,Powell remains focused on his immediate challenge in British Columbia.
“I make myself say what are the possibilities and the options, but ultimately, I am focused on what I have in front of me, in combat that comes. It will be my 12th professional fight. Now I have less pressure. Whether I win or lose, the next day I will do the same deal with the same world around me,” Powell said.
Powell relocated to Niagara Falls three years ago to dedicate himself fully to his MMA career, training at top Team under Chris Prickett. He credits the move with important improvements in his overall game.
“I improved everywhere. I am full everywhere. I am really comfortable on the ground. I have always been, but I would say that I am even more defensively and offensively. We have the best Canada wrestling gym, the results prove it, and my game really went up [de niveau],” Powell explained. “When you’re the best wrestler in a fight, you can decide where the fight goes.”
Powell anticipates utilizing his boxing skills in his upcoming fight, aiming to exploit his opponent’s weakness on his feet.
“My opponent is really comfortable on the ground, uncomfortable standing. The goal will be to endure the takedown then to tire him. It’s a five -round fight and I have a better cardio than him. I have more experience and I am calmer. I want to go get a finish and make it spectacular in the rounds 3-4-5,” Powell said.
Powell believes that past experiences, including a disappointing performance in front of UFC president Dana White, have shaped him into a more resilient and confident fighter.
“I feel super well and confident. Before I would have forced to be confident, now I am really. I feel like that, when I go out of the house, when I train. It is not impudence [[[[cockiness]I think I am the favorite and I’m going to prove it.”
Powell draws inspiration from fellow Gatineau fighters Julien Leblanc and Alain Majorique, who recently captured Samurai MMA titles.
“It’s really cool! It’s really inspiring [de le voir gagner],” Powell said. “The guys are successful and it’s really fun. Gatineau has some of the best fighters in the country, even if it’s not such a big city.”
Powell, who previously trained at the Patenaude Center, maintains close ties with several former teammates.
“I look guys like [Marc-André] Barriault (NDLR: fighting the UFC), [julien] Leblanc or even Dave Leduc. We have traveled a lot. The mentality of coach Patrick Marcil, it brings the fighters far away,” Powell said.
Powell hopes that a victory in his upcoming fight will position him for a potential UFC opportunity, joining the ranks of other successful fighters from the gatineau region.
