Zalando Closure Prompts emergency Meeting with Thuringian Officials
Officials from teh state of Thuringia, the city of Erfurt, and Zalando met to discuss the impact of the company’s planned closure of its Erfurt logistics center. the meeting included Thuringia’s Minister of Labor,Katharina Schenk (SPD),the managing director of the Thuringia Mitte Employment Agency,Irena Michel,Erfurt’s Lord Mayor Andreas Horn (CDU),and Zalando’s head of Peopel,Astrid Arndt.
Minister Schenk anticipates job losses will extend beyond Zalando’s direct workforce. “There are infinitely more people affected than those who work there,” Schenk stated.She estimates several hundred additional positions at service providers – including bus companies, other logistics firms, and security companies – could be at risk. Schenk emphasized the human cost, stating, “We are talking about an existential threat to employees.”
Irena Michel of the Employment Agency acknowledged the anxiety the closure is causing. “In such a situation,fears arise,” Michel said.
