Zambia’s Copper Boom: A Turnaround Fueled by Global Demand

Zambia is experiencing a dramatic economic turnaround, driven by surging global demand for copper, a critical component in artificial intelligence, green energy technologies and defense systems. Five years after becoming Africa’s first Covid-era debt defaulter, the nation is attracting significant investment as major powers compete for access to its vast copper reserves.

The scramble for copper highlights growing geopolitical rivalries, with industrial heavyweights including China, the United States, Canada, Europe, India and Gulf states all vying to secure supplies. According to the US Geological Survey, Zambia is Africa’s second-largest copper producer, after the Democratic Republic of Congo, and ranks eighth globally.

“We have the investors back,” President Hakainde Hichilema told delegates at the African Mining Indaba conference on Monday, February 16, 2026. He announced that more than $12 billion had flowed into the sector since 2022.

Copper is vital to Zambia’s economy, generating approximately 15 percent of its GDP and more than 70 percent of its export earnings. The metal is essential for the production of solar panels, wind turbines, power grids, data centers, and electric vehicles. Output rose 8 percent last year, exceeding 890,000 metric tonnes, and the government has set an ambitious goal to triple production within the next decade.

The International Monetary Fund forecasts that Zambia’s economic growth will reach 5.2 percent in 2025 and 5.8 percent this year, positioning it among the fastest-growing economies on the continent. Hichilema expressed optimism, stating, “The seeds are sprouting and the harvest is coming,” and announced plans for a nationwide geological survey to identify untapped copper deposits.

However, the rapid expansion of the mining industry also raises concerns about potential risks to local communities and the practice of “pit-to-port” extraction, where raw copper is shipped directly abroad with limited domestic refining. The lack of domestic refineries remains a challenge for Zambia, hindering its ability to maximize the economic benefits of its copper wealth.

The turnaround in Zambia’s fortunes comes after a period of economic hardship. The country defaulted on its debt during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the renewed interest in its copper reserves is offering a pathway to recovery and sustainable growth. The increased investment is not only boosting the mining sector but also creating opportunities for related industries and employment.

The demand for copper is expected to continue rising as the world transitions towards cleaner energy sources and embraces new technologies. This positions Zambia as a key player in the global supply chain for this essential metal, offering the potential for long-term economic prosperity. The country’s political stability, relative to other major copper producers like the DRC, is also seen as a significant advantage in attracting foreign investment.
