Zambra Era Begins: Hoops in Seventh Heaven
Corbet Hat-Trick Inspires Shamrock Rovers to Dominant Victory over Waterford
Shamrock Rovers delivered a commanding performance, spearheaded by a blistering hat-trick from Emily Corbet, to secure a resounding victory over Waterford FC. The Hoops showcased their attacking prowess, ultimately triumphing with a convincing scoreline that underlined their dominance on the pitch.
Clinical Corbet Leads the Charge
The opening exchanges saw Shamrock Rovers create early opportunities, with Ella Kelly narrowly missing the target from a tight angle after a beautifully clipped ball in behind the Waterford defense.Though, it was Emily Corbet who would soon make her mark. Just after the half-hour mark, Corbet demonstrated her predatory instincts, reacting quickest to an O’Gorman flick-on to coolly slot the ball past the helpless Maeve Williams and double Rovers’ advantage.
Waterford were handed a lifeline five minutes later when referee Ryan Maher pointed to the penalty spot. Following a corner and a scramble in the box, Corbet was adjudged to have fouled Laura Walsh. Chloe Atkinson stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, sending Summer Lawless the wrong way to halve the deficit and bring Waterford back into the contest.
Despite spurning a golden opportunity shortly after the break, Corbet quickly atoned for her miss. A well-rehearsed short corner routine saw Jaime Thompson cut back to the penalty spot, where Corbet swept home to restore Rovers’ two-goal cushion.
Rovers Run Riot in Second Half
The second half saw Shamrock Rovers truly take control, adding a further three goals in a devastating two-minute spell. A moment of individual brilliance from Aine O’Gorman saw her dribble across the box and reverse a low shot under Williams, extending the lead. Before waterford could regroup, Corbet completed her hat-trick, racing onto a long ball from Fiona Owens and finishing expertly to put the game beyond doubt.
Corbet’s notable 12-minute treble was rounded off when she found herself in ample space in the area, picked out by Ella Kelly. The former Athlone striker made no mistake from close range, further justifying the interim head coach Stephanie Zambra’s decision to keep her on the pitch.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Aine O’Gorman added a sixth for the ruthless Hoops. The experienced forward slid in to force home Kelly’s low cross, capping off a superb team performance and adding the final flourish to a dominant display.
