Russia, Ukraine to Resume Peace Talks in Istanbul
Updated June 2, 2025
Delegations from Russia and Ukraine will meet in Istanbul on Monday for another round of direct negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. Previous discussions in Istanbul on May 16 yielded little progress, with only a large-scale prisoner exchange agreed upon.
Vladimir Medinsky, an ideological adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, will lead the Russian delegation. Medinsky also headed the unsuccessful 2022 negotiations and has been a vocal proponent of the invasion, even questioning Ukraine’s right to exist. Rustem Umerov, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, will lead his country’s delegation. Umerov is considered a skilled negotiator, though his ministry has faced recent scrutiny.
A spokesman for the German government in Berlin said that diplomatic advisers from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom will be on the ground, working closely with the Ukrainian negotiation team.
The new round of negotiations is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. local time (12 noon in Paris) at the Palais Ciragan,a former Ottoman imperial residence on the Bosphorus, now a luxury hotel.
Russia has stated it will present a memorandum outlining its conditions for a peace agreement but has refused to share it with Ukraine in advance, despite Kyiv’s request.
These talks occur after a notable Ukrainian drone attack on Russian military aerodromes in Siberia.Ukrainian security services reported that the coordinated assault damaged several dozen aircraft, including strategic bombers.
