Joint Government Meeting with Slovakia
President Zelenskyy stated that he and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico agreed to hold a joint meeting of their governments in October. During this meeting, Ukraine will present options for alternative purchases to Russian oil and gas.
“There will be a government meeting in Slovakia where Ukraine can offer and offer alternative purchases, but it is not Russian oil and not Russian gas,” he stressed.
Zelenskyy also indicated plans to discuss the same issue with Hungary, but noted a lack of positive signals from Budapest thus far.
Patriot Air Defense Systems
A Patriot air defense system from israel has been operational in Ukraine for approximately one month. Ukraine is expected to receive two additional Patriot systems in the fall. Zelenskyy declined to provide further details regarding the systems.
The deployment of Patriot systems represents a meaningful boost to Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, providing protection against missile and air attacks. These systems are known for their advanced radar and interceptor technology.
US Arms Deal and Long-Range capabilities
Ukraine has communicated it’s desired weapons list to US President Donald Trump as part of the $90 billion agreement between the two countries. However, Kyiv is open to negotiating separate agreements with Washington for specific weapons, especially long-range systems.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is currently responding to Russian attacks using only its own long-range capabilities. He suggested that Ukraine would utilize other weapons if they were available.
Analysis: Ukraine’s reliance on its own long-range capabilities highlights the critical need for continued and expanded arms supplies from its allies. The ability to strike targets deep within Russian-held territory is seen as a key factor in deterring further aggression and perhaps shifting the momentum of the conflict.
