Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is seeking to address the outstanding territorial issue with Russia within the framework of negotiations to end the ongoing war, according to a report by Sky News Arabia.
Zelensky declared to Axios that if the United States doesn’t adopt a “strong” stance regarding territorial concessions, he is open to putting Washington’s “twenty-point” peace plan to a referendum, contingent upon Russia agreeing to a 60-day ceasefire to allow Ukraine to prepare for adn hold such a vote.
He is scheduled to meet with former U.S.President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday at Mar-a-Lago to discuss new peace proposals, though Trump cautioned that nothing is guaranteed until he gives his “consent.” Trump stated, “The Ukrainian president does not have anything until I approve of it,” adding, “So we will see what he has.” He also expressed optimism, believing things will go well with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, indicating he will speak with Putin “soon.”
This meeting follows Zelensky’s recent unveiling of a revised U.S. peace plan, updated after discussions with Ukraine. Moscow has criticized the new version, accusing Kyiv of attempting to derail negotiations.
The revised plan proposes freezing the current front lines without immediately resolving Russia’s territorial demands, wich include control of over 19 percent of Ukraine. Russia is demanding Ukraine withdraw from parts of the eastern Donetsk region its forces haven’t been able to control during the nearly four-year conflict, aiming to control the entirety of the Donbass region, encompassing Donetsk and Luhansk.
Kyiv,in turn,is seeking a freeze in fighting along the current front lines. The United States has proposed establishing a free economic zone should Ukraine withdraw from the region, though the practical implementation of this zone remains unclear.
