President Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky is considering teh possibility of removing Vasily Malyuk from the post of head Security Services of Ukraine (SBU) and assigning him to another position. This was reported on friday, January 2, by the Ukrainska pravda (UP) newspaper and the RBC-Ukraine news agency, citing their own sources in government structures. About the same wrote on his Telegram channel Deputy Verkhovna rada Yaroslav Zheleznyak from the “Voice” faction.
According to Ukrayinska Pravda, Malyuk may be appointed head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of Ukraine or secretary National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) countries. UP does not indicate who in this case can head the SBU, but reminds that the head of the Security Service of Ukraine is appointed to the position and dismissed from it by the Verkhovna Rada on the advice of the president of the country.

Background: The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU)
The SBU is the main domestic security agency of Ukraine. It is indeed responsible for counterintelligence, counterterrorism, and combating organized crime. The agency has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, particularly since the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the conflict in donbas. Recent operations have focused on identifying and neutralizing Russian agents and saboteurs operating within Ukraine.
Potential New Roles for Vasily Malyuk
Two potential roles have been suggested for Malyuk if he is removed from his position as head of the SBU:
- Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR): The SVR is responsible for Ukraine’s foreign intelligence gathering and analysis.
- Secretary of the national Security and Defense Council (NSDC): The NSDC is a consultative body that advises the President on national security matters.
