Zelensky Calls Out America After Russian Airstrikes on Ukraine
Updated May 25, 2025
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged stronger international action following a major Russian air assault. The overnight attack involved nearly 300 attack drones and about 70 missiles, according to Zelensky. At least 12 deaths were reported.
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported intercepting 95 Ukrainian drones during the same period.
Zelensky took to social media to criticize what he called the “silence of America,” arguing that it emboldens Russian president Vladimir Putin. He emphasized the need for strong pressure, including sanctions, to achieve peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“Silence of America, silence of others around the world only encourage Putin,” he said. “Without truly strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this brutality cannot be stopped.”
Keith Kellogg, former President Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, echoed the call for de-escalation, urging an immediate cease-fire. He condemned the attacks as a violation of the Geneva Peace Protocols.
Despite the ongoing conflict, a prisoner swap occured, bringing 303 Ukrainian defenders home. This exchange was part of a larger agreement made during peace talks in Turkey.
Earlier in May, Trump spoke with Putin for two hours and then with Zelensky, describing the conversations as positive and indicating that cease-fire talks would commence.
“The world can now see whether its leaders are truly capable of securing a cease-fire and achieving real, lasting peace,” Zelensky said on X.
What’s next
International efforts to secure a lasting cease-fire and de-escalate the Russia-Ukraine war are expected to continue, with a focus on diplomatic pressure and potential sanctions.
