Zelenskyy & Modi Discuss Limiting Russian Energy Exports
Zelenskyy Appeals to Modi for Support on Peace Efforts and Russian Oil Sanctions
New Delhi – August 11, 2025 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a detailed phone conversation with indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, briefing him on teh escalating situation in ukraine and urging stronger international pressure on Russia, particularly regarding energy sanctions. The discussion comes amid heightened tensions following former US President Donald Trump’s recent tariff hikes on Indian oil imports from Russia.
Zelenskyy informed modi about recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages, specifically referencing yesterday’s strike on a bus station in Zaporizhzhia, which injured dozens.he emphasized that these attacks appear to be a purposeful attempt to prolong the conflict despite emerging diplomatic possibilities.
“I had a long conversation with the Prime Minister of India,” Zelenskyy posted on X. “We discussed in detail all crucial issues – both of our bilateral cooperation and the overall diplomatic situation. I am grateful to the Prime Minister for his warm words of support for our people.”
A key focus of the conversation was the need for a unified international approach to ending the war.Zelenskyy stressed the importance of India’s continued support for peace efforts and its stance that any resolution must involve Ukraine directly. “It is important that India is supporting our peace efforts and shares the position that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine’s participation. Other formats will not deliver results,” he stated.
Sanctions and Energy Security
Zelenskyy also pressed Modi on the necessity of limiting Russian energy exports, particularly oil, to curtail Russia’s ability to finance the ongoing war. He argued that strong signals from influential leaders are crucial to influencing Moscow’s actions.”It is important that every leader who has tangible leverage over russia sends the corresponding signals to Moscow,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
This appeal follows a recent escalation in trade tensions with the United States. Former President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian oil imports from Russia, citing concerns over india’s continued purchases despite repeated warnings. India swiftly responded, defending its energy security needs and criticizing the tariffs as unfair and unjustified.
“We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs declared. “India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.” Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned Trump’s actions, labeling him a ”bully.”
India’s Position and Future Cooperation
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed india’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and its support for efforts to restore peace. He thanked Zelenskyy for sharing his perspectives and conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful settlement.
“Glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments,” Modi posted on X. “I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine.”
The two leaders also reviewed the progress of the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership and discussed avenues for enhanced cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They agreed to hold a personal meeting during the upcoming UN general Assembly in September and to explore opportunities for reciprocal visits.
The conversation underscores the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding the Ukraine conflict, as India navigates its relationships with both Russia and the West while prioritizing its own national interests and advocating for a peaceful resolution.
