Zelenskyy Says Sceptics Can Be Convinced on Ukraine’s Nato Bid
Ukraine Seeks NATO Invitation as Zelenskyy Demands More Weapons
kyiv,Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his call for Ukraine to join NATO,arguing it’s crucial for the nation’s survival. Speaking on Sunday, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for security guarantees and advanced weaponry before engaging in any peace talks with Russia.
“An invitation for Ukraine to join NATO is a necessary thing for our survival,” Zelenskyy stated. He stressed the importance of “steps forward with NATO” and a “good number” of long-range weapons to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
Zelenskyy’s comments came after meetings with Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s new top diplomat, and Antonio Costa, the EU council chief, who visited Kyiv in a show of solidarity on their first day in office.Kallas echoed Zelenskyy’s sentiment, stating that NATO membership is the strongest security guarantee for Ukraine. “We need to definitely discuss this – if Ukraine decides to draw the line somewhere, than how can we secure peace so that Putin doesn’t go any further,” she said.
Kallas also suggested that the EU should not rule out sending troops to enforce a ceasefire, advocating for “strategic ambiguity” on the matter.
Escalating Tensions and Global Implications
The push for NATO membership comes amid escalating tensions. At least three people were killed in a Russian drone attack on Kherson, a city liberated by Ukrainian forces in late 2022.
Simultaneously occurring, the war in Ukraine is having ripple effects globally. Germany’s Foreign minister Annalena Baerbock accused China of providing Russia with weapons and undermining peace in Europe and the Indo-Pacific. Baerbock, who will travel to China next week, warned that Beijing’s actions threaten European interests.
She highlighted the interconnectedness of security in Europe and Asia, pointing to North Korea’s potential involvement in the conflict as a cause for concern.
Arms Sales Surge Amid Global Instability
The war in Ukraine has also fueled a surge in global arms sales. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) reported that the world’s 100 largest arms manufacturers increased their sales by 4.2% in 2023, reaching US$632 billion.
While US companies saw a slight increase in sales, European companies, excluding Russian firms, experienced a surge in order intake, driven in part by the demand for weapons linked to the war in Ukraine.
As the conflict continues, the debate over Ukraine’s NATO membership and the global implications of the war are likely to intensify.
