President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported the detection of specific activity
along sections of the northern border between Ukraine and Belarus, prompting increased vigilance from Ukrainian security forces.
In a video address published on his official Facebook account on May 2, 2026, Zelenskyy stated that rather unusual activity
had been observed on the Belarusian side of the border on May 1. He emphasized that Ukrainian authorities are closely documenting these movements to maintain control over the situation.
“We are closely documenting everything and keeping the situation under control. If necessary, we will react. Ukraine is ready to defend its people and its sovereignty. Everyone who is being drawn into any aggressive actions against Ukraine must understand this.” Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine
Military Readiness in Belarus
The warnings from Kyiv follow a period of intensified military focus within Belarus. On March 20, 2026, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko announced that the Armed Forces of Belarus had demonstrated adequate combat readiness overall
following a snap inspection. While Lukashenko noted some shortcomings that required addressing, the inspection aimed to assess equipment conditions, supply levels, and the ability of units to deploy rapidly.
Further military developments in Belarus have been tracked throughout April 2026. Reports from the International Security Analysis Network (iSANS) indicated a series of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flights in Belarusian airspace. Between April 13 and April 19, six UAV flights—five Russian and one Ukrainian—were recorded, and between April 20 and April 26, nine flights—eight Russian and one Ukrainian—were observed. In both instances, Belarusian Air Force duty units were deployed to intercept the drones.
Border Security and Strategic Context
Despite the current alarms, recent assessments from Ukrainian border agencies had suggested a lack of large-scale mobilization. On April 29, 2026, Andrii Demchenko, a spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service (SBGS), stated that border guards had not observed the movement of equipment or the reinforcement of troops on Belarusian territory. Demchenko noted that Belarus has maintained certain units in specific directions since 2022, which Minsk claimed was to strengthen its own security against potential Ukrainian actions.
The tension remains high due to the strategic proximity of Belarus to Kyiv, which is located less than 100 kilometers from the border. Ukraine remains concerned about the possibility of Belarusian forces joining the conflict or providing a launchpad for further Russian offensives, mirroring the events of February 2022.
This border instability coincides with ongoing Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure and Ukraine’s own long-range campaign targeting Russian oil assets. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces conducted strikes against oil infrastructure in the Perm and Krasnodar krais and Orenburg Oblast between April 29 and May 1, 2026.
President Zelenskyy indicated that in response to the regional instability and the activity on the border, Ukraine is pursuing new sanction packages and continuing diplomatic negotiations throughout May 2026.
