Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on April 8, 2026, his support for a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, stating that the move reinforces the necessity of diplomacy to end ongoing conflicts.
Zelenskyy used the de-escalation in the Middle East to appeal to Russia, asserting that Ukraine remains ready to enter a reciprocal ceasefire if Moscow halts its strikes against the country.
Zelenskyy’s Position on Diplomacy
In a statement shared on Telegram and X (Twitter), Zelenskyy described the ceasefire between the U.S. And Iran as the right decision that leads to the end of the war
.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that such agreements are essential for saving lives, preventing the destruction of cities and villages, and ensuring that power plants and other critical infrastructure can operate without disruption.
This is saving people’s lives, avoiding the destruction of cities and villages, allowing power plants and other infrastructure to operate normally, and this is the time and the necessary conditions for diplomacy to yield results.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine has consistently called for a ceasefire in the war waged by Russia, arguing that the current silence in the Middle East and the Gulf creates the necessary prerequisites for diplomatic work and potential agreements.
The US-Iran Ceasefire Agreement
The ceasefire follows an agreement reached on the night of April 7-8, 2026. U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he agreed to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks.
The condition for this two-week suspension is that Iran must agree to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Russian Response and Trilateral Talks
The Kremlin also welcomed the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran on April 8, 2026. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia views the truce with satisfaction
and supports efforts to prevent further armed escalation.
Peskov expressed hope that the pause in hostilities in the Middle East would provide the United States with more time to resume three-way peace talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S.
The Russian spokesperson referred to previous negotiations that took place in Geneva, Abu Dhabi, and Istanbul, noting that those discussions had been paused following the start of hostilities in Iran.
While the Kremlin hopes for a return to the trilateral format, Zelenskyy maintains that the primary condition for a ceasefire in Ukraine is for Russia to first stop its strikes, at which point Kyiv is ready to respond in kind
.
