Zenlens: Multifocal Scleral Lenses – Vision & Comfort
- MINNEAPOLIS — Zenlens custom scleral contact lenses improved visual acuity and yielded more than 11 hours of comfortable wearing time, according to a poster at Optometry’s Meeting.
- “When patients with complex corneal conditions also require presbyopic correction, customizations become increasingly important,” Karen R.
- To fill that gap, a real-world assessment was performed using data submitted from eye care practitioners in Ireland, Canada and the United States.

Key takeaways:
- All nine eyes reached distance visual acuity of 20/30 or better with the scleral lens.
- Patients reported an average comfortable wearing time of 11.6 hours.
MINNEAPOLIS — Zenlens custom scleral contact lenses improved visual acuity and yielded more than 11 hours of comfortable wearing time, according to a poster at Optometry’s Meeting.
“When patients with complex corneal conditions also require presbyopic correction, customizations become increasingly important,” Karen R. Hoffman, OF, of Orange Park Eye Center, Florida, told Healio. “Zenlens by Bausch + Lomb offers design flexibility and extensive customizations, including the ability to vary the near zone size and add power. Currently, there is limited real-world evidence for Zenlens.”
To fill that gap, a real-world assessment was performed using data submitted from eye care practitioners in Ireland, Canada and the United States. Hoffman and colleagues conducted a sub-analysis of that data, focusing on the visual outcomes and lens-fitting experiences of multifocal lenses in nine eyes of five patients.
“The main reason for fitting these lenses, as you might expect, was keratoconus, but we also had patients with myopia and presbyopia and a patient with neurotrophic keratitis,” Hoffman said. “Of these, two of the patients were unhappy with their current lenses.”
When looking at the fitting results, the mean add power was 1.8 D, the mean near zone size was 1.8 mm, and the average pupil size was 2.8 mm.
For distance visual acuity, no eyes were 20/20 with spectacle lenses, while all eyes reached 20/30 or better with the scleral lens. For near visual acuity, eight eyes could read 20/30 or better.
An average of 2.3 follow-up visits and modifications were required to reach the final fit. Patients reported an average comfortable wearing time of 11.6 hours.
“This sub-analysis provided valuable insights into real-world visual outcomes and lens fitting practices with Zenlens using multifocal optics,” Hoffman said. “Patients that had discontinued other lenses because of poor customization options and visual outcomes reported good outcomes with Zenlens, and most importantly, most patients achieved good distance and near visual acuity with full all-day wear comfort.”
