San Fernando, Texas – After more than a decade, three members of the notorious Zetas cartel have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their roles in the horrific 2010 massacre of 72 migrants in San fernando, Texas.

Martín Omar Estrada de Luna, known as “El Kilo,” Román Ricardo Palomo Rincones, alias “El Coyote,” and Juvenal Burciaga Venegas, “El Alacrán,” were found guilty of organized crime, kidnapping, and corruption of minors.

The gruesome massacre took place on August 23,2010,in the rural outskirts of San Fernando. The victims, hailing from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Brazil, were migrants seeking a better life in the United States. They were kidnapped and brutally murdered after refusing to pay ransom demands and join the cartel.

Luis Freddy Lala Pomavilla, an Ecuadorian survivor, recounted his harrowing escape. He walked for hours through the night, eventually reaching a group of Marines for help. lala Pomavilla led authorities to the gruesome scene where the bodies of 72 migrants, bound and riddled with bullets, were discovered.

The Zetas, a splinter group of the Gulf Cartel, were quickly identified as the perpetrators. The cartel’s reign of terror in Mexico and along the U.S.-Mexico border was marked by extreme violence and brutality. After years of inquiry and legal proceedings, justice has finally been served.Martín Estrada, alias “El kilo,” received a sentance of 73 years and three months in prison, along with a fine of $948,900. Román Ricardo Palomo Rincones, “El Coyote,” was sentenced to 82 years and nine months in prison and fined $1,042,899. Juvenal Burciaga Venegas, “El Alacrán,” received a sentence of 76 years and nine months in prison and a fine of $676,591.50.

The sentences bring a measure of closure to the families of the victims and serve as a reminder of the devastating consequences of cartel violence.

Remembering the Victims: A Conversation About the San Fernando massacre

Maria: Did you hear about those Zetas members finally getting sentenced for that horrific massacre in San Fernando back in 2010?

David: No, I don’t think I did. What happened?

Maria: It was just awful.Seventy-two migrants, from all over Central and South America, were kidnapped and killed by the Zetas cartel. They were just trying to get to the United States for a better life.David: That’s terrible! What happened to the cartel members who did this?

Maria: Three of them were just found guilty of organized crime, kidnapping, and corruption of minors. One guy, “El Kilo,” got 73 years. Another, “El Coyote,” got 82 years, and the last one, “El Alacrán,” got 76 years.

David: Wow, those are some heavy sentences. It’s good to know they’ll be off the streets for a long time.

Maria: I know. It took over a decade, but there’s some justice for those victims. You know, one survivor, luis Freddy Lala Pomavilla, actually escaped and led the authorities to the bodies. Can you imagine the horror he must have experienced?

David: That’s incredibly brave. It’s hard to fathom the suffering those victims and their families endured.

Maria: This whole case really highlights the brutality of cartel violence along the border. The Zetas were notorious for their ruthlessness.

David: It’s a reminder of the dangers migrants face on their journey north. It’s heartbreaking.

Maria: It really is.Hopefully, this verdict brings some semblance of closure to the victims’ families. They deserve that much.
