ziegler’s Ace Hardware is streamlining its operations, closing underperforming locations and reinvesting resources into its remaining stores. This strategic shift aims to strengthen the company’s position in the competitive hardware retail market.
“We’ve been evaluating our stores for a while now, and we’ve made the tough decision to close some locations that weren’t meeting our expectations,” said Adam Ziegler, the current owner. “We are taking the inventory and resources (that we have been putting) into these stores that have continued to decline and put them into stores that are remaining.”
A Century of Hardware in Elgin
The Ziegler family’s involvement in the hardware business dates back to 1930, when Lyle Ziegler purchased an existing hardware store in Elgin, Illinois. The store officially became an Ace Hardware franchise in 1934, aligning with a growing national brand.
For three generations, the business remained within the Ziegler family. Lyle’s sons, Gregg and Jim, led the company from the 1950s thru the 1980s. They then passed the reins to Lyle’s grandsons, Brian and David, who managed the business from the 1980s until the mid-2000s.
Adam Ziegler took over in 2020, representing the fourth generation of family ownership. His son, David, currently serves as the company president, ensuring the continuation of the family legacy.
The Meadowdale Shopping Centre, where one of the Ace Hardware locations is situated, has a rich history of its own. Built in 1955 by developer leonard W.Besinger, it was one of the largest strip malls of its time, initially featuring 14 stores and eventually expanding to include 40 commercial spaces according to historical reports.
Retail trends and the Future of Ace Hardware
Ziegler’s Ace Hardware’s consolidation strategy reflects a broader trend in the retail industry. Many brick-and-mortar stores are facing challenges from online retailers and changing consumer habits. Focusing on profitable locations and enhancing the in-store experience are key strategies for survival.
Ace Hardware,as a cooperative, offers a unique model. Unlike many large hardware chains, Ace stores are independently owned and operated, allowing them to tailor their offerings to local markets. This localized approach can be a meaningful advantage in a competitive landscape.
