Zii Jia Faces Lakshya Sen: Crucial Battle for World Tour Finals Qualification
Lakshya Sen vs. Lee Zii Jia: A Crucial Match Ahead
Lakshya Sen of India can impact Lee Zii Jia’s chances of qualifying for the World Tour Finals. Lakshya is recovering from a loss to Zii Jia at the Paris Olympic Games in August. They will meet in the first round of the China Masters today in Shenzen.
This match is significant for Zii Jia. He has lost four out of six matches against Lakshya and needs to perform well to secure a win. If Zii Jia wins, he will play against either Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto or Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in the second round.
Both players had disappointing performances at the Japan Masters last week. Zii Jia lost to Jonatan Christie in the quarter-finals, while Lakshya was eliminated in the opening round by Leong Jun Hao. While Lakshya may be fresher, Zii Jia is highly motivated. He wants to qualify for the World Tour Finals after missing the last two editions. His last qualification was in 2021.
Zii Jia is currently ranked sixth in the Race to Hangzhou and needs to stay in the top seven to qualify. Li Shifeng recently moved into seventh place after winning the Japan Masters. Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen has already secured a spot by winning gold at the Paris Olympics.
Lakshya is not competing for a Finals spot. If he defeats Zii Jia, other players like Taiwan’s Lin Chun-yi and Japan’s Koki Watanabe will have a chance to qualify. They also need to perform well in the tournament.
The China Masters is the final major event offering ranking points for the World Tour Finals, making this match crucial for both players.
