Zimbabwe Ferry Capsizes on Lake Kariba: 15 Dead, Dozens Missing

The disaster on the world’s largest man-made lake prompted an immediate rescue operation involving speedboats and helicopters as emergency responders worked to reach survivors. According to the Civil Protection Unit of Zimbabwe, 77 people were successfully rescued from the water and transported to an island on the lake for safety. State broadcaster ZBC published video footage showing speedboats navigating toward the overturned hull while a helicopter hovered overhead. Earlier, Zimbabwe police confirmed that a rescue operation was underway across the massive body of water.

Passenger Manifest and Capacity Discrepancies

The disaster management agency stated that the vessel had a maximum carrying capacity of 90 people. Official ticket sales confirmed that 114 adult passengers and five crew members were onboard when the boat left the shore. However, the Civil Protection Unit noted that an unknown number of children below ticketing age were also on the vessel and remain unaccounted for in official tallies.

Mutsa Murombedzi, a local member of Parliament, shared video footage showing people on shore waving off the ageing ferry at the beginning of its voyage. According to that video, some community members standing on the bank expressed concern about whether the boat could survive strong waves on the lake. Rural communities routinely rely on the ferry to travel along the lake toward the town of Kariba.

Geography of Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba forms a natural and economic border between Zimbabwe and Zambia in southern Africa. Built in the late 1950s and early 1960s by damming the Zambezi River, the resulting valley slowly filled with water to create the largest man-made lake in the world by volume. The body of water stretches more than 200 kilometers, or 124 miles, long and reaches up to 40 kilometers wide in certain places, with the official international border running through the middle of the lake.
