Jakarta – Muhammad Cholil Nafas, a member of the Syuriyah Council of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), the largest Islamic institution in Indonesia, has publicly discussed internal conflicts and alleged Zionist penetration within the organization’s management. Cholil stated that these indications pose a threat to PBNU’s credibility and reputation.
“Yes,as from the beginning, there was a consensus from the Executive Board, from the PBNU Syuriyah, first of all, there were indications of Zionist penetration in PBNU. That is the main thing, so this perception will damage PBNU’s credibility and good name,” Cholil told journalists, as reported by Detik.com.
Background: Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU)
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is the largest independent Islamic organization in Indonesia. Founded in 1926, it plays a significant role in Indonesian religious, social, and political life. PBNU (Pengurus Besar Nahdlatul Ulama) is the central executive board of the organization.NU is known for its moderate and inclusive interpretation of Islam and its commitment to Indonesian nationalism.
With an estimated 40 million members,NU wields considerable influence, notably in East Java, but its reach extends throughout the archipelago. The organization manages a vast network of schools, universities, and social institutions.
the Allegations of Zionist Penetration
Cholil Nafas’s statement suggests concerns about external influence within PBNU. The term “Zionist penetration” typically refers to the perceived infiltration of individuals or groups associated with Zionism – the national movement for the self-determination of the Jewish people – into positions of power or influence. The specific nature of this alleged penetration remains unclear.
The allegations come amidst reported internal conflicts within PBNU management. While the details of these conflicts are still emerging, Cholil nafas indicated that some individuals were not involved in the organizational decision-making process, suggesting a potential power struggle or factionalism.
