According to a critic poll conducted by World of Reel, David Fincher’s 2007 crime drama Zodiac has been named the filmmaker’s best work, securing 51 votes out of 118 total ballots submitted by critics, programmers, filmmakers, and scholars.

A Clear Winner in a Competitive Filmography

The poll results placed Zodiac far ahead of Fincher’s other directorial efforts across his twelve-film career. Fight Club followed in second place with 23 votes, while The Social Network secured 21 votes and Se7en garnered 17 votes, according to World of Reel.

Further down the rankings, Gone Girl received five votes, followed by Alien 3, The Game, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in the low single digits. Four films in Fincher’s catalog—Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Mank, and The Killer—failed to receive a single vote on any ballot.

Collider similarly highlighted Zodiac in August 2026, naming the 2007 feature the top thriller movie of the last 26 years in its ranking of the six most perfect thrillers released since 2000. That list also included Gone Girl, alongside titles from other directors such as Nightcrawler and No Country for Old Men.

Director Commentary and Real-World Roots

Zodiac follows the staff of the San Francisco Chronicle as they track the elusive serial killer whose identity has never been officially discovered. Writing for Parade and syndicated by Yahoo in August 2026, coverage detailed how Fincher drew from his own childhood memories growing up in Northern California during the late 1960s.

In the DVD audio commentary for the film, Fincher explained that the project reflects his personal recollections of the era rather than relying purely on conventional genre tropes.

The Zodiac letters to me were kind of the most important hook in the movie, they were certainly the biggest hook for me as a kid, David Fincher

Fincher noted that the physical letters sent by the killer provided a fascinating insight into an aberrant psychological makeup. He also emphasized that he views the feature primarily as a newspaper story rather than a standard serial killer movie, noting that it evolves into an exploration of justice and the obsession it breeds.

Reception and Streaming Context

World of Reel noted that critical appreciation for Zodiac has risen steadily in the nearly 20 years since its theatrical release. Observers have increasingly valued its quiet focus on the painstaking investigation and pervasive dread rather than shock value.

Conversely, the poll results highlighted a critical divide regarding Fincher’s recent streaming output with Netflix. Outlets covering the poll pointed out that his recent streaming collaborations, including Mank and The Killer, were shut out entirely. The low placement of these titles reflects ongoing industry debates surrounding the filmmaker’s decade-long partnership with Netflix, which Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux publicly criticized in 2024 by claiming Fincher had left traditional cinema.

Fincher’s upcoming thirteenth feature, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, faces scheduling adjustments and reshoots ahead of its scheduled IMAX release on November 23, according to World of Reel.
