Updated June 25,2025
In a stunning upset,Zohran Mamdani,a progressive candidate, declared victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night after Andrew Cuomo conceded. The victory marks a meaningful shift in the political landscape, highlighting voter concerns about affordable living and the appeal of progressive policies.
Mamdani, a relative newcomer to the political scene, built a considerable lead over cuomo, the former governor. His campaign focused intensely on addressing the high cost of living in New York City, a message that resonated with many voters. His platform includes proposals for free buses, affordable childcare, and stabilized rents, all aimed at easing the financial burden on working families.
“Today, eight months after launching this campaign with the vision of a city that every New Yorker could afford, we have won,” Mamdani told supporters at his election night party.
Mamdani said Cuomo called to concede and expressed hope the primary “has come to an end.” He also appealed to voters who did not support him in the primary.
“I will be the mayor for every New Yorker,” Mamdani said. “I cannot promise that you will always agree with me. But I will never hide from you.”
Mamdani, a state legislator representing a district in Queens as 2020, also outlined a vision for New York City as a progressive beacon. He emphasized rejecting “Donald trump’s fascism” and stopping ICE deportations, positioning the city as a model for the Democratic Party.
Mamdani’s rise from relative obscurity is attributed to his focus on economic issues and the support of the party’s progressive wing. He secured endorsements from prominent figures such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. bernie Sanders. Comptroller Brad Lander, another Democratic mayoral candidate, supported Mamdani late in the race.
Critics, however, question the feasibility and cost of Mamdani’s proposals, noting that many would require approval from the state Legislature and governor. His views on Israel and his socialist label could also present challenges with centrist voters.
if elected, Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor. Born in Uganda, he moved to New York City at age 7 and later became a naturalized U.S. citizen. his mother is award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, and his father is Columbia University anthropology professor Mahmood Mamdani.
What’s next
Mamdani now faces the general election, where he will need to broaden his appeal beyond the progressive base to win citywide.
