Rama Duwaji: Zohran MamdaniS Wife, Pro-Palestine Artist
Rama duwaji, the 27-year-old wife of New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani, has stepped into the spotlight following Mamdani’s Democratic primary win. The pro-Palestine illustrator’s emergence comes after critics accused Mamdani, 33, of keeping her out of the public eye during his campaign against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Duwaji, who met Mamdani on Hinge, celebrated her husband’s victory and declared on Instagram she “couldn’t possibly be prouder.” Mamdani thanked Duwaji onstage, kissing her hand in front of supporters.
While her Instagram bio states she is “from damascus,” a mamdani spokesperson told the New York Times that Duwaji was born in Texas. Her artwork, featured in galleries like London’s Tate Modern and outlets including the New Yorker, often carries pro-Palestine themes and criticizes Israel and the Trump governance.
Mamdani addressed the criticism surrounding his wife’s initial absence from the campaign trail in an Instagram post, stating, ”You can critique my views, but not my family… (Rama) isn’t just my wife, she’s an amazing artist who deserves to be known on her own terms.” He shared images from their wedding.
recent works on Duwaji’s Instagram include calls to free Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia student and pro-Palestine activist detained by the Trump administration. She also shared an animation in May condemning Israel’s treatment of civilians in Gaza.

Mamdani’s rise has prompted scrutiny of his experience. As a state assemblyman, he co-sponsored bills on inmate housing based on gender identity, limiting law enforcement inquiries about immigration status, and mandating eco-friendly packaging for small businesses.
Critics fear a Mamdani victory would lead to increased lawlessness, reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic. When questioned about his experience, Mamdani highlighted his ability to address New Yorkers’ challenges and offer a fresh vision for the city.

Mamdani, who calls himself “Trump’s worst nightmare,” advocates for raising taxes on top earners, free childcare and buses, $65 million for transgender care, rent freezes, and city-owned grocery stores. He has also supported defunding the police, defended pro-Palestine slogans, and suggested arresting israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His wife, Rama Duwaji, and her pro-Palestine advocacy, will likely continue to be a talking point as the mayoral race continues.
