Pitești, Romania – A 52-year-old zookeeper was fatally mauled by a tiger at the Pitești Zoo in Romania on Thursday after he reportedly forgot to close the animal’s secure enclosure.
The tragedy occurred as the zookeeper entered the tiger’s enclosure to clean it. According to protocol, tigers at the Pitești Zoo are supposed to be moved to a separate, secure enclosure behind a locked gate before anyone enters their primary habitat.
However,the zookeeper failed to secure the gate,allowing the tiger to return and attack him.
“Unfortunately, this mistake resulted in a fatal attack by the animal,” the Pitești City Hall saeid in a statement.
Emergency services arrived at the zoo within 10 minutes, but the zookeeper was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses described the attack as horrific, and zoo staff quickly secured the other four tigers in the enclosure to prevent them from escaping.
The zookeeper, who had worked at the Pitești Zoo sence 2015, reportedly had no known health issues. Prosecutors and police have launched an investigation into the incident.
“This is a tremendous loss, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this tough time,” said Mayor Cristian Gentea.
The Pitești City Hall emphasized that zoo officials must take necessary steps to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
“This is the first incident of this kind to occur at the institution in the last 50 years,” the statement added.
This incident follows similar events in Romania’s past. In 2000, a tiger escaped from the Pitești Zoo after several gates where left unlocked. Last year, a tiger escaped from the Sibiu Zoo as a worker also forgot to secure a gate.
