Table of Contents
Paks suffered a 3-0 defeat against Ukrainian side Polissya Zhytomyr in the first leg of their Europa Conference League second qualifying round, leaving their hopes of progressing hanging in the balance. Despite a surprisingly familiar stadium setting, Paks struggled to contain a Polissya team brimming with experience and ukrainian national pride.
A Slovakian Setting with a Ukrainian Edge
The match unfolded in Prešov, Slovakia, a location neither team initially anticipated. While both clubs where based 40 kilometers away in Košice, the choice of Prešov’s Tatran Presov stadium presented a unique atmosphere. The stadium, recently renovated and hosting matches during the U21 European Championship, including a quarter-final clash between Denmark and France, bore a striking resemblance to Paks’ own Paks Arena – complete with green and white seating.
However, the familiarity didn’t translate to comfort for the Hungarian side. polissya, fresh off a qualifying win against Santa Coloma of Andorra (4-1 on aggregate), entered the contest as the clear favorites. The Ukrainian club’s squad boasted 14 legionnaires, led by head coach ruslan Rotan, a veteran of 416 Dnipro appearances, spells with Dynamo kyiv and Slavia Praha, and a century of caps for the Ukrainian national team. Rotan opted for an all-Ukrainian starting eleven, a visible display of national unity as the players entered the field draped in Ukrainian flags.
Polissya Take Control in the First Half
Despite a promising start from Paks, Polissya quickly asserted their dominance. Early chances fell to Oleksandr Andrijevsky, whose 20-meter shot tested Adam Kovácsik in the Paks goal, and Boris Krusinsky. Paks attempted to respond, with Kristóf Papp’s header lacking the necesary power and József Windecker’s 16-meter shot narrowly missing the target.
However, the Ukrainian pressure proved relentless. In the 38th minute, Oleksandr Andrijevsky broke the deadlock, giving Polissya a deserved lead. Just moments later, Danilo Beszorovajnin doubled the advantage, leaving Paks with a mountain to climb before halftime. Kovácsik was forced into several key saves to prevent further damage.
Second-Half Surge Seals Paks’ Fate
The introduction of Attila osváth and János Hahn at the start of the second half failed to stem the tide. Polissya continued to control possession and dictate the tempo. In the 62nd minute, Bohdan Lednev extended Polissya’s lead to 3-0, effectively sealing the fate of the Hungarian side.
Paks pushed for a consolation goal, with János Hahn finding himself in a promising position in the 79th minute, onyl to be denied by Bálint Vécsei.A subsequent variation was ruled out by the referee. Polissya finished the match with ten men after a late red card, but their three-goal cushion remained intact.
Looking Ahead
The 3-0 victory represents a significant step towards advancement for polissya. Paks face an uphill battle in the return leg, needing a remarkable turnaround to keep their Europa Conference League dreams alive. The Ukrainian side’s experience, tactical discipline, and unwavering national spirit proved too much for Paks to handle in this first encounter.
