Cooper Flagg became the first teenager in National Basketball Association history to score over 50 points in a single game on April 3, 2026, although his effort was not enough to prevent the Dallas Mavericks from falling to the Orlando Magic 138-127.

The 19-year-old rookie, who was the No. 1 overall pick, finished the game with 51 points. Flagg shot 19 of 30 from the field, including six of nine from three-point range, and converted all seven of his free throw attempts. In doing so, he also became the youngest player in the history of the league to record a 50-point performance.

Orlando’s Balanced Attack

The Orlando Magic secured the victory through a balanced offensive performance. Wendell Carter Jr. Led the team with 28 points, while Desmond Bane contributed 27 points. Other significant contributions came from Jalen Suggs and Tristan da Silva, who both scored 19 points, and Franz Wagner, who added 18 points.

The Magic maintained a strong presence throughout the game, shooting 56 percent from the field and 54 percent from three-point range. Their efficiency allowed them to stay ahead of Dallas despite Flagg’s scoring surge.

Game Progression and Timeline

Orlando established early control in the opening period, shooting 65 percent from the floor to lead 38-31 after the first 12 minutes. Dallas attempted to rally in the second quarter, utilizing strong three-point shooting to tie the game at 53.

Game Progression and Timeline

However, the Mavericks struggled offensively toward the end of the second quarter, committing several turnovers and missing multiple shots. This allowed the Magic to extend their lead, ending the first half ahead 71-58.

The third quarter saw the Magic further dominate the Dallas defense, entering the final frame with a significant 111-92 lead. The fourth quarter was characterized by volatility, including a scoring binge by Flagg that helped Dallas close the gap and force an Orlando timeout.

Ejections and Coaching Changes

The final quarter was marked by disciplinary issues for the Mavericks. Head coach Jason Kidd and player Naji Marshall were ejected seconds apart early in the fourth quarter following a disagreement over a non-call on a drive by Cooper Flagg.

Flagg was also involved in the dispute and received a technical foul before Kidd entered the court to protest. Assistant coach Frank Vogel assumed coaching duties for the remainder of the game. Vogel briefly benched Flagg late in the fourth quarter when the rookie had reached 45 points; upon returning, Flagg hit a corner three-pointer and eventually reached the 50-point mark with a basket and a successful free throw.

Dallas Mavericks Home Struggles

The loss on April 3, 2026, marked the 14th consecutive home defeat for the Dallas Mavericks. This represents the longest home losing streak in the history of the 25-year-old American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks’ current struggle is their worst home stretch since the 1993-94 season, when the team lost its first 19 games at the now-demolished Reunion Arena. Aside from Flagg, Brandon Williams was the leading scorer for Dallas with 23 points. P.J. Washington Jr., the team’s third-leading scorer, missed the game due to an illness, marking his third consecutive absence.

Conference Standings

With the victory, the Orlando Magic remain a half-game behind the Charlotte Hornets for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The Magic are currently positioned safely for the play-in tournament and maintain a possibility of reaching the top six to secure automatic entry into the Eastern Conference playoffs.
