Zurich Protests: Hundreds Demonstrate, Fireworks & Police Injury

Demonstrations in Zurich Turn Violent as World Economic Forum Meetings Loom

Zurich, Switzerland – Several hundred demonstrators took to the streets of Zurich on Friday evening, resulting in clashes with police, vandalism, and the deployment of crowd control measures. The protests, reportedly linked to events in Rojava and coinciding with preparations for the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, escalated as participants engaged in disruptive behavior and confrontations with law enforcement.

According to a statement from the Zurich City Police, the unauthorized demonstration began around 7:00 PM on Helvetiaplatz. Many participants were reportedly wearing masks. Following a brief speech, the demonstrators formed a procession and moved through the city streets.

The route taken by the protesters included Stauffacherstrasse, Langstrasse, Militärstrasse, Kasernenstrasse, and Badenerstrasse. Police intervened at Kalkbreitstrasse to prevent the demonstration from continuing, directing participants back towards Helvetiaplatz, where the protest ultimately dispersed. Throughout the march, participants ignited flares and set off fireworks.
