Zwift, the online fitness platform, has acquired ROUVY, a real routes cycling app, in a deal announced on April 29, 2026. The acquisition includes FulGaz, which ROUVY previously acquired, consolidating a significant portion of the indoor cycling market under Zwift’s umbrella. While financial terms were not disclosed, the move is expected to streamline hardware standards and potentially challenge the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in the virtual cycling space.

According to a statement released by Zwift, the two companies will continue to operate independently, maintaining separate roadmaps and subscription services. This approach differs from ROUVY’s previous acquisition of Bkool, which was ultimately integrated into the ROUVY platform. Zwift CEO Eric Min expressed his respect for ROUVY’s achievements in developing a real video experience and believes the acquisition will accelerate Zwift’s mission to increase activity levels among more people.

“What we have is a major moment for both Zwift and ROUVY,” says Eric Min, Zwift Co-Founder, and CEO. “We have a huge amount of respect for what ROUVY has achieved, developing a fantastic product and growing their global community by demonstrating there is a strong market for real video experiences. ROUVY’s differentiated experience is proof we can be stronger together, and I’m excited to see how this deal will accelerate our mission to make more people, more active, more often.”

A key immediate change resulting from the acquisition is full support for Zwift hardware within ROUVY. Zwift Ready smart trainers and Zwift Ride smart frames will now work natively with the ROUVY application, expanding access to ROUVY’s augmented-reality real-route experiences. This support addresses a previous compatibility issue where ROUVY had reverse-engineered support for Zwift hardware due to Zwift’s proprietary protocol.

The indoor cycling market has experienced significant growth, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by the affordability and simplicity of smart trainers. This growth has also been marked by instability, with Wahoo’s RGT shutting down in 2023 and Peloton facing financial challenges. The consolidation of Zwift and ROUVY represents the largest shift in the indoor cycling landscape to date.

The acquisition also brings into focus the potential for Zwift to navigate the regulatory landscape independently. The move is described as potentially “sidestepping the UCI,” suggesting a strategy to operate outside the traditional governing body’s control. This aspect of the deal could reshape the future of virtual cycling events and competitions.

ROUVY’s library of over 2,000 real-world filmed routes complements Zwift’s primarily fictional virtual worlds, offering cyclists a diverse range of riding experiences. Petr Samek will continue to lead the ROUVY side of the business, ensuring the platform maintains its distinct identity and roadmap. Further integrations between the two platforms are planned in the coming months.

The acquisition of ROUVY, including FulGaz, follows a period of turbulence within the indoor cycling industry. Zwift itself underwent staff reductions in 2024, highlighting the competitive pressures within the market. By bringing ROUVY into the fold, Zwift aims to solidify its position as a leader in the virtual cycling space and capitalize on the growing demand for indoor training solutions.

For years, Zwift and ROUVY represented contrasting philosophies in indoor cycling. Zwift focused on gamification and virtual worlds, while ROUVY prioritized realistic, real-world routes. The combination of these approaches under one company could appeal to a broader range of cyclists and further drive the growth of the indoor cycling market.
