Apple announced on April 9, 2026, that it is permanently closing three of its retail stores in the United States. The closures impact locations in California, Connecticut and Maryland, with the company citing deteriorating conditions at the shopping malls where these stores are situated.
The three affected locations are the Apple Store at North County in Escondido, California; the Apple Store at Trumbull in Trumbull, Connecticut; and the Apple Store at Towson Town Center in Towson, Maryland. According to the company, these stores are scheduled to close in June 2026, with final closures slated for June 11, 2026.
Retail Conditions and Mall Declines
Apple attributed the decision to the departure of several retailers and declining conditions
at the specific malls housing the stores. This strategy reflects a broader evaluation of existing retail locations to determine if they continue to meet customer needs effectively.
The company provided specific examples of the decline at these sites. Trumbull Mall, where the Connecticut store is located, recently defaulted on more than $150 million in loans amidst ongoing business closures and financial struggles.
Similarly, the Towson Town Center in Maryland has seen multiple businesses close earlier in 2026, including Wockenfuss Candies, Banana Republic, and Tommy Bahama.
As we continue investing to expand and enhance our retail stores and offerings worldwide, we remain deliberate about evaluating our existing locations to ensure that we can meet our customers’ needs in the best way. Following the departure of several retailers and declining conditions at Trumbull Mall, the Shops at North County, and Towson Town Center, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our stores at these locations.

Employee Transitions and Union Conflict
The impact on staff varies by location. Employees at the Escondido and Trumbull stores will be able to continue their roles at other nearby Apple Retail locations.
The situation is different for the staff at the Towson Town Center location. Workers there were offered the opportunity to apply for open roles within Apple rather than being directly transferred. Apple stated that the collective bargaining agreement prevents the company from transferring the approximately 90 employees at the Towson store to other locations.
The Towson location holds significant historical weight for the company’s retail operations, as it was the first Apple Store branch to unionize, having done so in 2022.
The decision to shutter this specific store has led to allegations of union-busting from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, also known as the IAM Union.
Operational Status
As of the announcement period, the three stores were listed as temporarily closed today
on their respective Apple website pages, though they were scheduled to reopen briefly before their permanent closure in June.
These closures come as Apple continues to evaluate its global retail footprint, balancing the expansion of new offerings with the necessity of closing locations that no longer align with the company’s operational standards or the economic viability of their host environments.
