The Premier League has officially secured a fifth Champions League place for the 2026/27 season. This additional slot was confirmed following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on April 7, 2026.

The extra berth is the result of the European Performance Spot (EPS) system, which rewards the two highest-performing leagues across UEFA’s three primary competitions: the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. England’s success in these tournaments ensured the league finished among the top two in the coefficient rankings for the season.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Premier League has earned an additional spot. For the current season, the league saw five teams participate via the standard qualification route—Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle—while Tottenham Hotspur joined as a sixth team after winning the Europa League.

Coefficient Standings and Performance

England led the UEFA coefficient standings for much of the campaign, accumulating 25.013 coefficient points, which placed the league well ahead of second-placed Spain. The collective performance of English clubs was significant, with all nine teams that entered the three European competitions successfully advancing through the group stages.

While all nine representatives reached the last 16, only five English teams progressed to the quarterfinal stage. Arsenal’s narrow win over Sporting CP provided the final necessary points to solidify England’s position in the top two of the rankings.

The Race for Fifth Place

The confirmation of the fifth spot has intensified the competition within the Premier League standings. Fifth place now guarantees Champions League football for the 2026/27 season, expanding the battle for European qualification beyond the traditional top-four race.

The Race for Fifth Place

As of April 8, 2026, Liverpool occupies fifth place with 49 points. However, the standings remain highly competitive, with only seven points separating fifth place from 13th place, currently held by Bournemouth.

The teams currently positioned in the scramble for this spot include:

  • Liverpool (5th place, 49 points)
  • Chelsea (6th place, 48 points)
  • Brentford
  • Everton
  • Fulham
  • Brighton
  • Sunderland
  • Newcastle United

Brentford and Everton are currently three points behind Liverpool, keeping them within striking distance of the additional Champions League berth.

Potential for Further Representation

There is a possibility that the Premier League could send even more than five teams into the 2026/27 Champions League. This could happen if a team wins the Europa League while finishing outside the top five in the domestic league.

Aston Villa, currently in fourth place, would trigger this scenario if they win the Europa League but ultimately finish outside the top five. Similarly, Nottingham Forest could increase the English tally if they win the Europa League from a lower position in the table. A similar scenario exists for Liverpool regarding their current Champions League campaign.
