The Houston Astros’ starting pitching rotation faced further instability on Sunday, April 12, 2026, when right-hander Cody Bolton was forced to leave the game against the Seattle Mariners due to mid-back tightness.
Bolton, who was making his second start, recorded only three outs and threw 42 pitches before being removed from the contest at T-Mobile Park. After allowing one run in the first inning, Bolton walked the first three batters he faced in the second inning, prompting manager Joe Espada and an athletic trainer to visit the mound during Bolton’s at-bat with Brendan Donovan.
A Pattern of Rotation Injuries
The exit of Bolton is the latest in a series of setbacks for Houston’s starting staff. Within the last week, the team has seen three starting pitchers return to Houston due to injuries.
Ace Hunter Brown and fellow starter Cristian Javier were placed on the 15-day injured list earlier in the week after both were diagnosed with grade 2 shoulder strains. Both pitchers have been shut down from throwing for a period of two weeks.
Tatsuya Imai flew back to Houston on Saturday, April 11, 2026, to be evaluated for right arm fatigue. This followed a performance on Friday, April 10, 2026, where Imai struggled to throw strikes and recorded only one out before failing to complete the inning.
As of Saturday, April 11, 2026, Mike Burrows and Lance McCullers Jr. Were the only members of the season-opening rotation without injury concerns. Burrows currently holds a 5.63 ERA across three starts.
Connection to Previous Injury
The back tightness reported on April 12, 2026, may be related to an incident during Bolton’s previous appearance. On Monday, April 6, 2026, during a spot start in Denver, Bolton was struck in the back by a line drive in the first inning.
Following that incident, the Astros sent Bolton for a precautionary MRI. While he returned to the mound for the series against Seattle, it remains unclear if the discomfort experienced on Sunday is a direct result of the previous impact.
Roster Depth and Bullpen Strain
The depleted rotation has placed significant pressure on the Houston bullpen. Through 15 games, the bullpen has thrown 65 innings, surpassing the 64 1/3 innings recorded by the starting rotation.

This strain coincides with a demanding schedule, as the team began a stretch of 13 consecutive games without a day off on Friday, April 10, 2026.
Astros general manager Dana Brown addressed the situation on the team’s pregame radio show on Sunday, April 12, 2026, noting the organization’s efforts to prepare for such scenarios.
Dana Brown
This is why we went out and signed a lot of pitchers this offseason. We feel like we have some depth now that’s currently in our bullpen.
Looking Ahead
To stabilize the rotation, the Astros are expected to call up Spencer Arrighetti from Triple-A Sugar Land. Because Arrighetti pitched on Thursday, April 9, 2026, he is not expected to be available on four days’ rest until the game against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Daikin Park.
The team may also look toward Jason Alexander, who was listed as the probable starter for Sugar Land on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Alexander recently threw seven innings on 69 pitches during a Triple-A start on Tuesday, April 8, 2026, providing the kind of length the Astros currently lack.
