Tragedy in Tumbler Ridge: Nine Killed in School and Home Shootings

Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia is reeling after a mass shooting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, left nine people dead, including seven shot at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The suspected shooter is also deceased, succumbing to what appears to be a self-inflicted injury at the school.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to reports of an active shooter at the school at approximately 1:20 p.m. Local time. Six people were found dead inside the school, and a seventh died while being transported to a hospital.

Two additional fatalities were discovered at a residence in Tumbler Ridge believed to be connected to the incident, according to police.

In total, 27 people were injured in the shootings. Two victims were airlifted to hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries, while approximately 25 others were treated at a local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have not yet released details about the shooter, other than to describe them as a woman with brown hair wearing a dress, as indicated in an emergency alert sent to residents’ phones. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

“We are not in a place now to be able to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” said RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd during a press conference. “I think we will struggle to determine the ‘why,’ but we will try our best to determine what transpired.”

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School serves 175 students in grades 7 through 12. The school, along with Tumbler Ridge Elementary School, was placed on lockdown during the incident. The community-wide alert was cancelled at 5:45 p.m., with police stating there were no outstanding suspects.

The municipality of Tumbler Ridge expressed profound grief in a statement, saying, “There are no words sufficient for the heartbreak our community is experiencing tonight.”

Darian Quist, a student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, recounted the events to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). He described being in a mechanics class when a lockdown announcement was made. Initially dismissing it, he began receiving “disturbing” photos depicting the unfolding carnage. “Then it set in what was happening,” Quist said.

He and his classmates remained in lockdown for over two hours before being escorted out of the school by police, who instructed them to put their hands up. His mother, Shelley Quist, shared her relief at being reunited with her son, stating, “He’s not going to be out of my sight for a while now.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described himself as “devastated” by the “horrific” shooting, offering his prayers and condolences to the families and friends of the victims. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the violence “unimaginable.”

Mass shootings are rare in Canada. However, eleven people were killed in Vancouver in April during an attack targeting a Filipino cultural festival.

The RCMP is continuing its investigation, searching other homes and properties in Tumbler Ridge for any additional sites connected to the incident. The town, located more than 1,100 kilometers north of Vancouver, has a population of approximately 2,400 residents.

Federal opposition leader Pierre Poilievre described the shooting as a “senseless act of violence.”
