The Sony a7 V, released in December 2025, continues to dominate the full-frame mirrorless camera market, retaining the top spot in Map Camera’s January 2026 sales rankings. However, its reign isn’t without a shift in momentum. While still the best-selling camera of the month, the a7 V experienced a “significant” drop in sales compared to its blockbuster debut, according to reports from Map Camera and Digicame-Info.

The camera’s initial launch was described as “overwhelming” by Map Camera, outselling the next four best-selling cameras combined in December. January’s figures show a considerable shrinking of that lead, alongside a noticeable decrease in overall sales volume. Map Camera attributes this decline to a minor supply issue early in the month, which was resolved by mid-January, but also notes the drop was “quite sudden,” suggesting other factors may be at play.

Despite the sales dip and initial online criticism, the a7 V has proven to be a successful launch for Sony. The 33-megapixel full-frame camera is positioned as a mid-range option for both photographers and videographers, and has seemingly outperformed its closest competitor, the Canon EOS R6 Mark III, which released less than a month prior. Notably, the R6 Mark III did not appear on Map Camera’s list of January bestsellers.

The strength of Fujifilm’s lineup is also apparent in the January rankings. The Fujifilm X100VI secured second place, a testament to its continued popularity despite ongoing supply constraints. Map Camera reports selling through its entire inventory of the X100VI, highlighting persistent high demand. The Fujifilm X-E5 and X-M5 followed in third and fifth place respectively, with the X-T30 III taking sixth.

Rounding out the top ten were the Sony a7C II (fourth), Sony a6700 (ninth), Ricoh GR IIIx (seventh), Ricoh GR IV (tenth), and the Nikon Z5 II (eighth). Like the Fujifilm X100VI, the Ricoh GR series cameras are consistently in high demand and quickly sell out due to limited supply.

Map Camera also publishes data on used camera sales. In January, the Sony a7C II topped the list of best-selling used digital cameras, followed by the Sony a7 III, Canon EOS R6 Mark II, Sony a7 IV, Ricoh GR IIIx, Ricoh GR III, Nikon Z50 II, Fujifilm X-H2, Fujifilm X-T5, and the Nikon Z fc.

Map Camera’s data is considered a valuable indicator of trends within the Japanese photography market, and by extension, provides insights into global preferences, particularly among serious photographers. While not a comprehensive representation of the entire market, its focus on dedicated enthusiasts makes its rankings particularly noteworthy. The January data suggests that while the Sony a7 V remains a popular choice, the competitive landscape is evolving, and supply chain issues continue to influence purchasing decisions.
