[김한준 기자의 e게임] Mage Stalker, stunning LOL action pixel art

Mage Seeker: The story of League of Legends (Mage Seeker) is a game that clearly reveals its identity from its name.

In the ‘League of Legends Story’ section, it is revealed that this game is a game that uses League of Legends intellectual property (IP), and in the title ‘Magic Stalker’, the main setting of the original, Demacia, and the popular character Silas emerges and it turns out to be a game.

Mageseeker is a game that makes good use of the ‘Story of Demacia’ and in-game settings that Riot Games once tried to highlight in the game. The ‘Story of Demacia’ is the basic foundation of Mage Scavenger’s story, and the game progresses with this world view and character conflict as the main point.

However, what stands out the most is the appearance of Demacia drawn in 2D pixel art, not 3D graphics, and the performance of each character. The heavy but fast action of Silas, who wears a chain and throws it around the enemy to close the distance instantly, is brilliantly executed in pixel art.

Here, many places in the Demacia region that only existed in the setting are drawn in pixel art, so they’re fun to look at.

The game progresses in a way that incorporates Silas’ character traits as much as possible. The unique action of Silas, who moves quickly and steals the enemy’s magic, has been implemented as an action game without a sense of heterogeneity.

In addition, the unexpectedness for repetitive play that is unique to roguelike games was added. The magic element that adds damage or is nullified depends on the attribute, and the enemy attack effect that decorates the screen to the point of reminding a bulletproof shooting game with a little exaggerating the challenge of those who like action games.

If you enjoyed the original League of Legends, the boss fight in Magseeker is more interesting. You can meet the main characters that symbolize the Demacia region in the boss battle. They put pressure on Silas by attacking using the original skill. In particular, the skill efficiency has been improved to the extent that it cannot be compared to the original. It’s a way to use welcome skills like Jarvan IV who fires flag spears and Morgana who often uses soul shackles in a form never seen before.

The perfection in the game is fine, but there are many things that need to be refined outside of play. In addition to not being able to skip events, there are also bugs that interfere with gameplay. The volume of content is not extensive either. It’s a point that can be fleshed out through subsequent patches or DLC, but it seems like it needs to be rolled out to users as soon as possible.

The implementation of Mage Stalker’s original IP and the completion level as a roguelike action game are all satisfying. However, looking at the original elements separately, it’s hard to tell that this game is noticeably newer than games of the same genre with 2D pixel art. It is a game where the real power comes out only when the two elements are added.
